HOOPING in TIME magazine!

Hot n' healthy Christabel, shot by Patrick Roddie (webbery.com)

To get in shape for her October wedding, Dawn-Samantha Cahill, 25, a production coordinator in New York City, tried every exercise routine she could think of. But the upended positions that yoga required made her feel self-conscious. Running on a treadmill was a bore. And lifting weights was just too difficult. Frustrated, Cahill started overeating instead of exercising, and her weight, on a petite, 5-ft. 2-in. frame, ballooned to 212 lb.

Cahill was nearly ready to give up, until one day last spring, she discovered a video on YouTube about hula-hooping. “The woman in the video was so sexy, and the moves she was making with a hula hoop were so cool,” Cahill says. “Normally, watching a gorgeous woman like this would make me feel bad. Instead, I wanted to imitate her.”

Fifteen FiveStar Reviews

Have you *seen* the Amazon page for the book recently?

5.0 out of 5 stars  A great intro to hooping for everyone, July 5, 2009
By     A. Drugay “Space Traveler, Part-Time Genius, … (San Francisco, CA) – See all my reviews

A comprehensive guide to getting off your butt and starting hooping! The book covers not only hooping skills, but holistic health – caring for the whole person – including nutrition and some metaphysics. The book and DVD combo are inspiring and fun – just like hooping is!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR ANY HOOPER!!, June 26, 2009

This book is great for any hooper. The moves are basic, for the ones that are just learning, but throughout the book you will find value information for any hooper, does not matter youe level. I strongly recommend to make it part of yourf personal library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-changing…, June 22, 2009

As a mid-thirties male with a desk job, I have to guess that I’m somewhat on the periphery of “Hooping”‘s target demographic, making it all the more delightful and surprising that I’ve enjoyed reading it so much. With infectious enthusiasm, the authors explore every dimension of physical, psychological, and spiritual gratification that collectively characterize the hooping journey.
This book may well mark the pivot point on which society finally turns: away from the monotony of gym-based workouts, and towards a transformational adventure of full-body expression.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, fun new way to work out, June 12, 2009

this book is a ton of fun…it makes a great present. the diagrams are super easy to use, and the best part is it’s a new sport that doesn’t require any gear but a hoop. i’m hooked.

Christabel and Ariane’s book rocks! It’s the bible of hooping! It’s elegant. It’s pure energy. It’s light! There is no better way to learn to hoop than this book and DVD combined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous from front to back…, June 11, 2009

This book is absolutely FABULOUS!! The detailed photos and descriptions are easy follow and the hoopers look like they are having so much fun! Its great to have as a reference when you are thinking “hmm….how do I do that move…if I could only see it broken down into steps…” and the best part is that if you need to “see” someone doing the move there is also a DVD included! However, the book is just not about learning moves….the stories inside too are of real people, real life health issues….oh and the music playlists are fabulous….and the “a tip for triumph” for each move are fabulous for those moves that are hard to master….what can I say..its a FABULOUS book!

5.0 out of 5 stars MEGA-AWESOME, June 11, 2009

This is a treasure – a fitness program works and is actually FUN! The instructions for the moves are super clear and, once I start learning a new one, it’s hard to put the hoop down. (I bought a hoop online […] and it’s so gorgeous that it hangs on my wall when I’m not using it.) And I love the warm, life-celebrating attitude that runs throughout the book. I can’t wait for my friends to get their copies and hoops so we can all learn the moves and practice together. Maybe we can even work up a little performance routine….(and we’re not exactly spring chickens, but who cares – EVEN MICHELLE OBAMA DOES IT!) 😉

5.0 out of 5 stars exceeded my highest expectations, June 10, 2009

This book surpassed even my highest expectations, which were already quite high since I’ve had the opportunity to witness the passion and commitment that Christabel Zamor and Ariane Conrad bring to their dance and to their art. Upon first receiving this book, I quickly flipped through and my eyes were met with loads of lovely images that sparked my imagination and made me want to dance. When I sat down with this book later and really read through it, I was thrilled to experience the depth of the ideas and theory tucked into the beautiful layout. This book hits home on all levels and is a real gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome intro to hooping!!!, June 9, 2009

If you ever wanted to get started hooping and were too afraid to, uh, ask, then this is your answer! Christabel Zamor and her co-writer, Ariane Conrad, have done an amazing job with this book. It has material for the beginning hooper and lots of great information for the intermediate or advanced hooper as well. Christabel includes info about the history and physiology of hooping, personal essays by hoopers, great breakdowns of different hoop moves, and ideas for combinations for those of us working on our “flow.” Not a single page is superfluous, and the whole book is intelligently written and beautifully photographed. The DVD is great, including warm-ups, cool-downs, cardio, and a combination. Spectacular job!

5.0 out of 5 stars So happy!, June 7, 2009

After seven years of seeking out every hooping related article I can find in magazines, Christabel has created an entire book dedicated to Hooping! This book is wonderful for both the experienced hooper and the newcomer. The pictures are beautiful and the stories are inspirational. The photo-series tutorials are easy to follow and the tips help you avoid common mistakes. Christabel has helped bring hooping into thousands of lives and this book makes it easy and fun for more to join the revolution. If you’ve never hooped before, this book is a great way to get started. If you’ve hooped for months or years, this book is still a must have. I especially love the brilliantly colored hooping time-line. Every hooper should own this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars HOOPALICIOUS, June 2, 2009

The perfect multimedia hooping experience! I wasn’t sure how it would be to learn hooping from a book but combined with the DVD this is a perfect match. I have gone to classes before, came home and forgot what I had learned. It is so nice to have a resource to pick up new moves or work on ones I’ve experienced in class. I also love how Hoop Girl goes deeper into spirituality and sensuality, I have never read a fitness book that does this. I love that the the model’s tattoo’s are not airbrushed out. It is nice to see real women with real bodies for a change. I have tried 2 of the smoothie recipes in the back and I am hooked on “Green Sunshine.” This is a very well rounded book and is good for beginners and intermediate Hooper’s that are looking for a visual resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars a revolutionary book, May 26, 2009

I am so excited to be holding this book in my hands. Not only is it one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen, it is inspiring! I have been hooping for a while now and am so stoked to finally have a book that talks about the history, many of the different moves, the people involved, and how it can change your life. It’s like physical proof that I can show everyone, sitting right on my coffee table.
It is also going to be an amazing book to help more people discover the awesomeness of hooping and what it can bring to their lives. With the DVD included, they can get started right away with learning the basic moves and keep evolving with the dozens of moves in the book! The pictures are incredible with each move broken down so clearly.
This book is going to help bring hooping to the masses, which in my opinion, will just make the world a better place!

Ariane interviewed, Stephen Colbert-style

From TheRumpus.net, an interview by Julie Greicius

sexy hoop shot by ilaniowear

Rumpus: Right! The book. Let’s talk about this book. You and this mortal HoopGirl have written a guidebook to sex.

Conrad: Actually, it’s a guide to hooping, the modern form of hula hooping.

Rumpus: Oh come now. Let’s take a look… “activate the muscles in your legs to power your pelvic thrusts,” it says here.

Conrad: Right, in order to keep the hoop in orbit around your waist.

Rumpus: I think we both know you’re talking about sex. How about this: “Don’t anticipate; respond to it. Push into it when you feel it touch you.”
